Living in Lisbon comes with an advantage that few recognise: in less than an hour, you can be on a great beach. From Costa da Caparica to Guincho, taking in Cascais and Sesimbra along the way, the choice is extraordinary.
Costa da Caparica — Lisbon's beach
Just 30 minutes from Lisbon, Costa da Caparica is the favourite beach of Lisboetas. With over 30 km of shoreline, it splits into several numbered beaches, each with its own character:
- Praia da Costa da Caparica: Right next to the town, with full amenities and a lifeguard service.
- Beaches further south: Quieter, popular with surfers and families.
How to get there: Fertagus train + bus, or ferry + bus via Trafaria.
Cascais — Beaches with village charm
The Cascais line offers a string of beaches starting at Estoril:
Praia de Carcavelos — The largest and most popular along the line, with a surf school and beach-volleyball courts.
Praia de São Pedro do Estoril and Estoril — Smaller, near the historic casinos.
Praia do Tamariz — Urban, with salt-water swimming pools next door.
Praia do Guincho — Wild, windy, framed by protected dunes and the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. Ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing.
How to get there: Cascais train (CP) from Lisbon Cais do Sodré — frequent and cheap.
Sesimbra — Setúbal's best-kept secret
Only 45 minutes from Lisbon, Sesimbra is one of the region's quieter highlights. The fishing village, with its Moorish castle perched on the hill, opens onto sheltered beaches with exceptionally calm, warm water.
Praia de Sesimbra: Wide, protected from the wind. Water quality: Excellent.
Praia do Portinho da Arrábida: At the heart of the Arrábida nature park, with water the colour of the Caribbean. Restricted access in summer (advance booking required).
Sintra — Wild beaches in the hills
Sintra's beaches have their own personality — Atlantic, windy and rugged in their beauty.
Praia das Maçãs and Praia Grande: Popular, with surf and bodyboard.
Praia da Adraga: Voted one of the most beautiful in Europe — small, wild and tucked beneath imposing cliffs.
