Praia do Norte is the setting for the world's biggest big-wave surfing records, where the surf legend Garrett McNamara rode a 30-metre wave in 2011. The submarine sandbar — the Nazaré Canyon — creates unique conditions for extraordinarily large waves, especially in autumn and winter. In summer, it is a quiet beach with good bathing conditions.
