River beaches are an often-overlooked treasure of Portugal. Away from the bustle of the coast, they offer calm, warm water, lush nature and, frequently, fewer crowds — perfect for families with children.

What is a river beach?

A river beach is a freshwater bathing area — on rivers, streams, reservoirs or dams — properly monitored by the health authorities and assigned a water-quality classification. In Portugal there are dozens of certified and classified river beaches, monitored by APA.

The best river beaches for families

Praia Fluvial de Adaúfe (Braga)

One of the best-equipped river beaches in the Minho region. Located on the River Cávado, it has a lifeguard, picnic area, bar and ample parking. The water is calm and shallow on one of the banks — ideal for younger children.

Praia Fluvial de Dornes (Ferreira do Zêzere, Santarém)

Set on a peninsula reaching into the Castelo do Bode reservoir, Dornes is one of the most picturesque river beaches in Portugal. The medieval village with its Templar tower makes the perfect backdrop. Note: parking is limited in summer.

Praia Fluvial de Loriga (Seia, Guarda)

High in the Serra da Estrela, Praia de Loriga is fed by cold, clear mountain water. The granite and mountain vegetation around it are stunning. Note: the water is colder than at lowland beaches.

Praia Fluvial do Agroal (Ourém, Santarém)

A crystal-clear pool with a striking turquoise blue caused by limestone in the surrounding rock. Agroal is one of the most photogenic river beaches in Portugal, with a look more like the Caribbean than the Portuguese interior.

Praia Fluvial de Constância (Santarém)

Where the River Tagus meets the River Zêzere, this beach has excellent facilities and the added bonus of sitting next to a historic village with plenty of dining options.

Tips for visiting river beaches

Water quality: Always check the most recent classification on infoagua.apambiente.pt before visiting. Water quality can vary with floods or temperature.

Temperature: Mountain river beaches (Serra da Estrela, Minho) have colder water, even in summer. Reservoirs in the Alentejo and Ribatejo tend to be the warmest.

Best time of year: July and August have the warmest water. June and September are great for visitors who prefer fewer crowds.

Safety: Even at beaches with a lifeguard, do not underestimate river currents. Children should wear life jackets in higher-flow areas.

Blue Flag at river beaches

Yes — there are Blue Flag river beaches. In 2025, around 50 Portuguese inland beaches held the certification, which guarantees the same quality standards applied to coastal beaches.
