What to expect from beaches in Porto

The district of Porto has 45 beaches classified by APA along around 50 kilometres of Atlantic coast, spread across seven municipalities: Espinho, Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto, Matosinhos, Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim. It is a district with a strong urban bathing identity — almost every beach is set within an urban fabric and reachable by public transport.

Vila Nova de Gaia holds the largest share of beaches in the district (Madalena, Lavadores, Aguda, Granja, Miramar, Francelos, Salgueiros), spread along around 16 kilometres of coast that end, to the south, at the Espinho border. Aguda stands out for preserving an active fishing community with its traditional arte xávega (beach-seine fishing). Praia de Lavadores is the only beach in the district with an ocean swimming pool.

Matosinhos is the capital of Portuguese surfing — Matosinhos beach is where surfing first arrived in Portugal in the 1960s, and it remains the country's most popular entry-level urban surf beach. The neighbouring Praia de Leça da Palmeira combines the Piscina das Marés saltwater pools (designed by the architect Siza Vieira) with a renovated urban beachfront.

To the north, Vila do Conde and Póvoa de Varzim offer longer, more family-friendly beaches with full amenities and traditionally smaller crowds than the central part of the district. Praia de Espinho, at the southern end, has one of the most imposing seawalls on the northern coast and a strong bathing tradition — it has been the summer beach of choice for many Porto families for more than a hundred years.

Getting there: Porto Metro (Line A) connects the city centre directly to Matosinhos. CP train to Espinho, Aveiro, Vila do Conde and Póvoa. A28 motorway along the entire coast. The bathing season runs from 1 June to 30 September. The water is cool (15–18°C) — anyone looking for longer bathing should head down to the Centre or the Algarve.
