Central Portugal has some of the country's best beaches and remains its most underrated region. Between the Costa de Prata, running from Espinho to Nazaré, and the river beaches hidden in the hills, the Centre combines huge stretches of sand, Excellent-rated water and far fewer crowds than the Algarve or Lisbon. This guide gathers the best beaches in Central Portugal for 2026, with each beach's official water rating (APA) and Blue Flag status.
Where are the best beaches in Central Portugal?
The best beaches in the Centre fall into two worlds: the Costa de Prata, along the Atlantic coast of the Aveiro, Coimbra and Leiria districts, and the river beaches inland, in the hills of Castelo Branco, Coimbra and Guarda. The coastal strip offers wide sands and Atlantic swell; the interior offers freshwater reservoirs and streams that are calmer and warmer. You can see every beach in the region on the Centre page.
Costa de Prata beaches in the Aveiro district
The best Aveiro beaches sit along the lagoon and the dunes to the south, with long sands and water rated Excellent. Praia da Barra, in Ílhavo, is dominated by the tallest lighthouse in Portugal and runs almost 4 km, with Excellent water and a Blue Flag in 2026. Next to it, Praia da Costa Nova do Prado is recognisable for its colourful striped houses (the palheiros) and also holds an Excellent rating and Blue Flag. Further north, Praia de São Jacinto, beside the São Jacinto Dunes Nature Reserve, is the wildest and longest of the three at around 5 km. All are in the Aveiro district.
Figueira da Foz and the Coimbra district beaches
Figueira da Foz has one of the widest urban beaches in Europe and is the flagship beach of the Coimbra district. Praia da Figueira da Foz is striking for the sheer width of its sand and has Excellent water and a Blue Flag in 2026. Around the headland, Praia de Buarcos is more sheltered, with a seafront promenade and a fishing-village feel, also Excellent. For nature and waves, Praia de Quiaios and Praia de Mira add dunes, pine forest and kilometres of sand, both rated Excellent. See the rest of the district on Coimbra.
Nazaré, São Martinho do Porto and the Leiria beaches
The Leiria district runs from the giant waves of Nazaré to calm bays ideal for children. Praia da Nazaré is world-famous for the Nazaré Canyon and the giant waves at Praia do Norte, but the town beach has Excellent water and normal summer conditions. For families with young children, Praia de São Martinho do Porto is the right choice: an almost-enclosed shell-shaped bay with calm water, an Excellent rating and a Blue Flag. In the Leiria pine forest, Praia de São Pedro de Moel blends cliff, forest and sand, and Praia de Osso da Baleia is one of the quietest on the coast, both Excellent with a Blue Flag. More in Leiria.
River beaches inland in the Centre
The best river beaches in the Centre are inland in Castelo Branco, Coimbra and Guarda, with fresh water that is warmer and calmer than the sea. Praia Fluvial de Vila Velha de Ródão, beside the Portas de Ródão on the Tagus, and Praia Fluvial de Idanha-a-Nova, on a large reservoir, are among the best-equipped in the country and rated Excellent. In the Serra da Estrela, Praia Fluvial de Loriga is known as the highest beach in Portugal, fed by mountain water. Praia Fluvial de Pampilhosa da Serra sits on a reservoir ringed by forest. Browse them all on all beaches.
Which Central Portugal beach is best for each trip?
The best beach in the Centre depends on what you want: quiet family time, waves to surf or wild nature. The table sums up the picks by trip type.
| Looking for | Recommended beach | District |
|---|---|---|
| Family with children | São Martinho do Porto | Leiria |
| Surf and bodyboard | Buarcos / Cova-Gala | Coimbra |

Bathing season and practical tips
The bathing season in the Centre officially runs from 1 June to 30 September, when beaches have lifeguards on duty. Outside that period access is free but unsupervised. Three useful notes:
- The Centre coast is cooler and windier than the Algarve, especially in the afternoon. The wind (the nortada) is usually lighter in the morning.
- The Atlantic is cold all year. The inland river beaches are the warmer summer alternative.
- Always check the latest water rating on the APA portal before you go, especially after heavy rain.
The Centre proves you do not need the Algarve for outstanding beaches. With dozens of beaches rated Excellent and flying a Blue Flag, from the Aveiro sands to the mountain reservoirs, there is an option for every profile and almost always more room on the sand.
