The central area of the district, around the Ria de Aveiro, holds the most iconic beaches. Just south, Costa Nova extends the beach by about four kilometres and the fishing village of striped palheiros in vivid colours — once the fishermen's shelters in the nineteenth century, now an architectural symbol of the district. North of the inlet, Praia de São Jacinto sits within the São Jacinto Dunes Nature Reserve and offers a fully preserved setting, reached by ferry from Forte da Barra.
To the north, the Espinho municipality stands out with urban, well-equipped beaches (Espinho, Baía, Silvalde), historically tied to Portuguese surfing — the municipality hosted the first surf school in the country. Murtosa (Torreira) and Ovar (Furadouro, Cortegaça) round out the coast with quieter beaches, popular with families from the central and northern regions.
Getting there: A1/A29 motorways link the district to Lisbon (2h30) and Porto (40 min). Intercidades train to Aveiro plus bus or ferry transfer. The bathing season runs from 1 June to 30 September. The water is cool (15–18°C) and Atlantic swell calls for caution — lifeguards are on duty at every beach with bathing classification.
